What do we mean by a spritual life through an engagement with everyday life?
When we talk about spirituality in everyday life we are talking about bringing a special sense to everything we do. It means approaching life with a sense of awe and wonder and is associated with feelings of care and concern for others, for the Earth and all living forms. It also means having a sense of gratitude, being thankful and having a feeling of being blessed by an energy or power greater than ourselves.
Engagement with everyday life means life in the family, at work, when socializing, being involved in recreation, sports, doing the shopping or indeed in anything we do whether we are dealing with other people or not. It also means engagement with the mystery of the sacred energy of the universe of which we are a part, without the religious baggage of the past.
This is the main formula for the spiritual journey of life and provides a solid base for the spiritual path ahead.
What is at stake in a spiritual life through an engagement with everyday life?
At this time the whole world is faced with enormous problems including the meltdown of the Earth’s ecology and the economy, social divisions at the local and global level and widespread psychological alienation. It’s hard in this situation to engage in a spiritual life in the face of these challenges they have a tendency to overwhelm us, particularly if that challenge includes facing uncertainty and insecurity associated with your income and employment future.
However, if these personal and collective challenges are to be faced and overcome then the solution starts with each of us learning how to engage everyday life as it is, and accepting that this is the reality that we must deal with. If you are able to live a spiritual life through an engagement with everyday life, the life that you are will be transformed and open to experience the unlimited possibilities that you have. At the collective level if sufficient people develop the capacities to engage in a spiritual life through engaging with everyday life then these people could form the basis of a social movement that would be able to influence the course of future events. You could be part of this movement!
This is the only way that major transformations take place.
